About the IACM |
New exhibition:
Take a Gamble Lotteries in the Netherlands The history of lotteries in the Netherlands dates back to the early 15th century. Since then lotteries have been part of Dutch society. Both the National Treasury and the inhabitants of the Netherlands have benefitted from them. In those early days the profits of mostly local lotteries were used for public works and charity. Since 1726 local lotteries were forbidden and a National Lottery was introduced. The main theme of the present exhibition in the Dutch Taxes and Customs Museum is the development of the lotteries since World War II. On display are pictures, prices, drawing machinery, engravings and mascots. Visitors of the exhibition can test if they are susceptible to become addicted to gambling, experience what it feels like to win a lottery or to host a lottery show on television.
André Jungbluth, our colleague of the National Customs&Excise Museum in Antwerp (Belgium) died on 8 September 2009 on the age of 60 after a short illness. He showed an interest in many subjects. Working at the museum was one of them. When the first Museum Committee was realized in Antwerp on 28 July 1986, he was already one of the prominent members. For several years he was responsible for the gathering of uniform garments. As he spoke different languages very fluently, he often guided French, English or German speaking visitors throughout the museum. Several IACM members were lucky to meet him at the General Assembly organized in Porto. While he was there he made a lot of friends in a very short time…That didn’t surprise us at all, because he was indeed a fine gentleman.
